Better Box Reveal: December 2020
This month, we bring you a resource engine building game with an inventive worker placement twist in Legendary Inventors, designed by Frederic Henry and illustrated by Gael Lannurien.
In this game, each player takes control of a team of famous inventors from throughout history in an effort to acquire patents for inventions. Now don’t worry if you’ve never heard of such inventors as Nicole Oresme, Hypatia, or Antoine Lavoisier; included with the game is a book of short biographies of the inventors in the game to give an idea of who it is you’re playing. The game is played over three ages, where a number of inventions are available for players to work on. On your turn you can either send one of your inventors to work on an invention, where they contribute resources equal to their particular attribute levels. When an invention is finished, the three players who contributed the most resources get to claim either the patent to the invention itself or one of the bonus tokens which have various beneficial effects.
One of the great things about this game is the variety of strategies you can employ to try to win. While getting patents for inventions is obviously a main way to gain points, each of your inventors has a personal goal for where their attribute levels should be by game’s end. So, while it might be tempting to go for the patent each time, grabbing the appropriate upgrade bonus token to get your inventors to their desired goal can open up a wealth of points. Diversifying the types of patents you claim will also lead you to points, as collecting runs of inventions from each category will give you bonus points equal to the highest number in your run. Also, we would be remiss to not mention the amazing tiebreaker token that you claim for being the player that puts the finishing touch on an invention.
